Evolutionary history of inquiline social parasitism in Plagiolepis ants

چکیده

Social parasitism, i.e. the parasitic dependence of a social species on another free-living species, is one most intriguing phenomena in insects. It has evolved to various levels, extreme form being inquiline parasites which have lost worker caste, and produce only male female sexual offspring that are reared by host force. The syndrome been reported 4 within ant genus Plagiolepis, Europe. Whether parasitism once or multiple times remains however unknown. To address this question, we generated data for 5 – 3 previously described 2 unidentified their hosts from Europe, inferred phylogenetic relationships. We tested Emery’s rule, predicts close relatives. Our results show independently at least genus. Furthermore, found all inquilines were associated with descendants related suggesting sympatric speciation main process leading emergence consistent stricter version rule.

A new workerless inquiline in the Lower Attini (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), with a discussion of social parasitism in fungus-growing ants

Ant inquilines are obligate social parasites, usually lacking a sterile worker caste, which are dependent on their hosts for survival and reproduction. Social parasites are rare among the fungus-gardening ants (Myrmicinae: tribe Attini) and only four species are known until now, all being inquilines from the Higher Attini. We describe Mycocepurus castrator sp.n., the first inquiline social para...

Army Ants Trapped by Their Evolutionary History

R eading the French version of Journey to the Ants by Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson (1996) during the course of my graduate studies, I remember being amazed by the description of circular mills formed by an isolated group of army ants. This phenomenon occurs when a group of foragers is separated from the main column of the raiding swarm by a perturbation of their pheromonal communication...

Evolution of social parasitism in ants: size of sexuals, sex ratio and mechanisms of caste determination

Social parasitism, one of the most intriguing phenomena in ants, has evolved to various levels, the most extreme form being parasites that have lost the worker caste and rely completely on the host's worker force to raise their brood. A remarkable feature of workerless social parasites is the small size of sexuals. It has been suggested that reduced size evolved as a means to take advantage of ...

Social parasitism in fire ants (Solenopsis spp.): a potential mechanism for interspecies transfer of Wolbachia.

One possible mechanism for interspecific transfer of Wolbachia is through the intimate contact between parasites and their hosts. We surveyed 10 species of fly parasitoids (Pseudacteon spp.) and one inquiline social parasite, Solenopsis daguerrei, for the presence and sequence identity (wsp gene) of Wolbachia. Two Wolbachia variants infecting S. daguerrei were identical to known variants infect...
